I backed out of ‘Barbie’ because it wasn’t feminist enough
Don’t toy with Amy Schumer.
The comedian, 42, was infamously set to play Barbie in the eponymous flick that follows the Mattel doll, during early development in 2016 — but stepped away from the high-profile project just months later.
Now, the “Life & Beth” star explained why she actually left the pink and plastic-filled feature.
“I can’t wait to see the movie, it looks awesome,” Schumer told Andy Cohen on Thursday’s episode of “Watch What Happens Live.”
Officially, all those involved cited “scheduling conflicts” for their failed partnership, Schumer recalled — but behind the scenes, she explained that she and Sony Pictures had contrasting opinions: “It really was just creative differences.”
She continued, “But you know, there’s a new team behind it, and it looks like it’s very feminist and cool so I will be seeing the movie.”
“Barbie” is directed by Greta Gerwig and will be driving its hot pink convertible to the silver screen on July 21.
Margot Robbie, 32, was ultimately cast as the blonde-haired character alongside Ryan Gosling as Ken and an ensemble cast that includes Will Ferrell, Helen Mirren, Due Lipa, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Nicola Coughlan and Alexandra Shipp.
Schumer was set to star and even co-write the initial version when it was first announced in 2016 in conjunction with Sony.
The New York City native dished to The Hollywood Reporter last year how she had a different idea for the screenplay than what the studio desired.
Her angle was described as “a fish-out-of-water tale about a woman who gets kicked out of Barbieland for not being perfect enough.”
“They definitely didn’t want to do it the way I wanted to do it, the only way I was interested in doing it,” she explained at the time.
Schumer wanted her version of Barbie to be an inventor; Sony reportedly wanted her gadget to be a high heel made out of Jell-O.
“The idea that that’s just what every woman must want, right there, I should have gone, ‘You’ve got the wrong gal,’” she recalled, adding that the company gave her a pair of Manolo Blahniks to celebrate her taking on the part.
