I forgot I auditioned for ‘Jeopardy!’ before massive win streak
I’ll take “poor memory” for $1,000.
“Jeopardy!” host Ken Jennings recently admitted he “forgot” he auditioned for the popular game show before his big win.
Last week, after contestant Ittai Sopher won his episode of the competition, he was curious about how Jennings, 49, made his way onto the show.
“How long did it take you to get on? Just curious,” Sopher asked the host in a video posted to social media.
Jennings admitted he had an interesting journey to make it to “Jeopardy!”
“I had never tried out, but it was the full season, like a full year went by, and I thought my eligibility had expired,” he shared.
A confused Sopher asked him to clarify, “What do you mean you never tried out?”
“Well, I did try. I tried out once and about a year later, I finally got the call,” Jennings explained. “And I had totally … it was enough time that I’d totally forgotten about it, and so suddenly I just panicked. I was, like, ‘Oh! I have three weeks to get good at Jeopardy!’”
Clearly, Jennings got good at the game show.
“Well, you succeeded!” Sopher quipped in response.
“Yeah, I overachieved a little bit,” Jennings joked back.
Jennings is somewhat of a “Jeopardy!” legend, having won the “Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time” tournament in 2020, though he has been previously called out for hosting snafus and past insensitive tweets.
He first appeared on the game show in 2004, making history with a 74-game winning streak that won him over $2 million.
Jennings is the biggest “Jeopardy!” champ of all time, and now he’s nominated for an Emmy for his hosting gig on the show.
