I was bitten on the butt and nearly drowned by a turtle

Sea turtles can apparently be a real pain in the you-know-what.

An elderly Russian tourist was left shell-shocked after getting bitten on the derriere and nearly drowned during an “awful” attack by an aggressive sea turtle. She detailed the bizarre encounter in a video that’s currently making waves online.

“It was really scary,” Lidia Bazarova, 64, told East2West news of the encounter, which occurred while she was taking a dip in the ocean near the popular Güzeolaba Resort in Antalya in the west of Turkey.

Bazarova said she was swimming only 10 or 12 feet from shore when something grabbed the senior’s “backside” and tried to drag her under.

“I didn’t know what it was that suddenly grabbed me,” the then-petrified woman recounted on camera while sitting beside her daughter, Kamila, 37. “I was beating about the water with my arms, I was drowning.”

Her attacker has since been identified as a loggerhead sea turtle, a common species that can weigh up to 375 pounds, according to ConserveTurtles.com. This highly carnivorous reptile preys on crabs, whelks and other mollusks, which it crushes with its powerful bill.

At one point during the attack, the sea critter released Bazarova — only to return and bite her again even harder. “I don’t know how long it lasted,” described the imperiled swimmer who was finally saved after a “rescuer” spotted her in trouble.

Her savior, a lifeguard named Mustafa Sarı, rushed toward Bazarova and started “yelling” at the creature, per her account. This distraction prompted the loggerhead to release its grip on the old woman, who said she “raced toward the shore” in a state of shock.

“I was fighting my pain and my fear,” described an aghast Bazarova.

Sarı then battled the beast, eventually scaring Yertle off, but not before he was bitten on the shoulder, according to reports.

Bazarova, meanwhile, who was bitten on her fingers, hip, legs and buttocks, making sitting uncomfortable. Accompanying photos show her painful red and blue butt bruises, which make it appear as if she was shot with rubber bullets.

“We thank the lifeguard,” Kamila chimed in. “Without him, maybe the result would have been bad.”

Fortunately, while her injuries weren’t life-threatening, Bazarova says she might never go back in the water again.

“I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to get back in the sea,” she told IHA news. Up until that point, the ocean lover had reportedly visited that particular swimming spot nearly every other day.

Unfortunately, Bazarova wasn’t the only one to incur the mini-Gamera’s wrath. “It bit a woman and a man before my mother,” said Kamila, adding that she wants “a warning posted about this danger.”

A sea turtle attack might seem like a freak occurrence — however, these reptiles are reportedly known to be aggressively territorial.

Turkish expert Professor Mehmet Gökoğlu explained turtles will attack humans who invade their living “living space,” adding that “there are cases of biting in shallow waters.”

Indeed, there have reportedly been a whopping 11 sea turtle attacks in the area in the past two weeks alone, according to East2West News.

When it comes to sea critter incidents, these territorial-turtle entanglements don’t compare to hungry shark encounters, which have been wreaking havoc along the Eastern Seaboard.

Just last week, two people were chomped on in the waters off Myrtle Beach, South Carolina — with one of the victims requiring hundreds of stitches after the vicious attack.

Meanwhile, New York waters have seen a major spike in shark bites, including six incidents off Long Island in July alone.
