Iga Swiatek follows Jessica Pegula in withdrawing from Guadalajara Open due to ‘intense’ season

Iga Swiatek has withdrawn from the WTA 1000 Guadalajara Open due to the demands of an “intense” season.

Sabalenka is not set to play in Guadalajara, which is the penultimate WTA 1000 event of the season, after making the US Open final.

Swiatek has now also withdrawn from the tournament in Mexico, which starts on September 17.

“Unfortunately I need to withdraw from the tournament in Guadalajara due to a change of schedule,” Swiatek posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“I need to listen to my body and the season is very intense — our number one priority is to play it until the end in good health and plan it wisely so we wouldn’t risk an injury.”

Swiatek added that she will return to action at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, which starts the week after the Guadalajara Open.

It is not known if new world No. 3 Coco Gauff will play in Guadalajara so soon after her US Open victory.

Defending champion Jessica Pegula has also pulled out of Guadalajara.

The world No. 5 did not give a reason for her withdrawal, but said on Instagram: “I am sorry to be missing this year after so many great memories last year.”

The Guadalajara Open is soon followed by the China Open, which is the last WTA 1000 of the season and starts on September 30.
