I’m a manners expert — how to tell guests to go home politely

While breaking out the fine china and charcuterie boards for a dinner party can be a lot of fun, there comes a time during every soirée when it’s time for the guests to vamos.

But how can one be cordial when telling their friends to skedaddle?

Manners coach Mariah Grumet has gained a following on TikTok by sharing her rules for being courteous to others, and now she’s offered ways to “politely end” a group gathering at your home without having to actually “kick your guests out.”

The etiquette trainer, who brands herself as an “old soul,” suggested that hosts should write down an end time on the invitation to ensure that guests have a timeframe for when to leave.

“For instance: Dinner party at my house on Friday from 6 to 10 pm,” she said. That way, partygoers can be prepared to make their exit once the clock starts counting down.

Another tip that Grumet proposed is chatting about and looking back on the night’s events as the wrap-up time approaches.

“Start to talk to your guests about the evening by recapping and displaying your gratitude,” she suggested.

However, the elegance coach also joked that party planners should not go and put on their pajamas during the bash in an effort to usher their friends out of the house.

Instead, Grumet encouraged viewers to use a final sweet course to help bring the night to a close.

“Have a clear distinction between the main meal and dessert,” she said. “By offering or serving things like after-dinner drinks, coffee or dessert, you are giving your guests a clear indication that this is the last step of the event.”

Fans loved her tips and one quipped that they make their visitors leave by simply “yawning.”

The social media influencer described several ways to help let guests know the party has ended.

“In my culture, we end off the gathering with fruit. Once fruit is served, it’s time to wrap things up,” one user teased in the comments.

“Haha us Europeans let guests stay till the next day versus ever having them think we want them to leave,” another fan chimed in. “If they ever feel it, they’d never come again.”
