‘I’m no world-beater yet’ – Jack Lisowski reveals key part of Judd Trump game he wants to emulate at World Grand Prix

Jack Lisowski admits he would be happy to win ugly after watching close friend Judd Trump claim the Masters without hitting top form.

Lisowski bounced back from his morale-sapping 6-0 whitewash defeat to Mark Williams in the semi-finals at Alexandra Palace with a 4-3 World Grand Prix win over Robert Milkins in his home town of Cheltenham.
The world No. 12 admits he is still mystified about the nature of his loss to Williams after enjoying victories over John Higgins (6-3) and Hossein Vafaei (6-4) respectively to reach the Masters last four in swashbuckling style.

“I’m still figuring out what happened in the Masters,” said Lisowski, who will face Zhou Yuelong in the World Grand Prix last 16 after Zhou’s 4-3 win over Thepchaiya Un-Nooh on Monday night.

“It wasn’t like I really got overawed. There wasn’t anything there, was there?”

Lisowski is being coached by the 2002 world champion Peter Ebdon and is working hard to back up his natural scoring ability with sterner matchplay skills after Trump recovered from 8-7 behind to defeat Williams 10-8 with unapologetic grinding tactical play.

“These are the biggest moments and you see Judd. He’s winning when he’s not playing well,” said Lisowski, who continues to chase a first major title after losing six ranking event finals between 2018-2021.

“That’s what I want. I have to figure that out.”

Lisowski certainly did not lack bottle as he recovered from trailing 3-1 to Milkins in a local derby dust-up to prevail at the Centaur by claiming the final three frames.

He enjoyed breaks of 55, 69, 60, 102 and 86 with Milkins producing 82, 54 and 72.

“I’m hitting the ball really well at the moment. I’m just happy with my technique,” commented Lisowski.

“I’m no world-beater yet, but my game is getting stronger where my weak areas were.”

Last season’s World Grand Prix finalist Neil Robertson’s struggles continued at the outset of the year as he lost 4-1 to Xiao Guodong in the first round after being ousted 6-4 by Shaun Murphy in his Masters opener.

Robertson has been recovering from a nasty bout of flu over the festive period.
