Indianapolis homeowner fatally shoots intruder with his own gun

An Indianapolis homeowner described thwarting an attempted home invasion — during which he stole the suspect’s gun and fatally shot him — like an action sequence straight out of a movie.

When a masked man broke into Brent Smith’s home just before 7 p.m. Tuesday, smacking him in the head with his firearm during an attempted robbery, Smith fought back, launching both men through a glass table during the fight.

“It was like a movie, me and him wrestling over the gun,” Smith told FOX 59 Indianapolis.

Smith admitted to shooting intruder Damon Swanigan Jr. with the suspect’s own gun during the struggle.

After shooting the would-be robber, Smith heard what sounded like “thousands of gunshots” from outside his home.

“When the gun went off I heard thousands of gunshots,” said Smith. “It was a lot of gunfire, man, a lot of gunfire.”

Smith said he exchanged gunfire with additional suspects who were waiting outside, using both the suspect’s gun as well as his own firearm. The onslaught damaged the siding and front door of Smith’s home and shattered the windows of a car parked on the street.

“I didn’t even think them or me. I was just basically trying to survive myself, man,” Smith added.

Smith was held and questioned by police overnight before being released, as the law allows people to defend themselves and their homes with deadly force.

The following morning Smith was emotional thinking about what had occurred, telling the outlet he didn’t intend to kill anyone.

“That doesn’t make no sense man. I didn’t want to do that,” said Smith. “I don’t know his intention, but I didn’t want to be shot. That’s just all there is to it.”
