Injury rules Marcel Sabitzer out for the remainder of the 2022/23 season with Manchester United career in balance

Manchester United loanee Marcel Sabitzer will miss the remainder of the 2022/23 season through injury, which effectively ends his stint at the club.

The Austrian midfielder suffered a knee injury when he came off the bench in a 1-0 defeat against West Ham at the London Stadium last weekend.

He will miss Man Utd’s final three league games as well as the FA Cup Final against Manchester City and is set to return to Bayern Munich in the summer where he joined from on loan in January.

A club statement read: “Everyone at the club is disappointed to lose Marcel’s services, as the Reds chase a strong finish to the season in the Premier League and FA Cup, and we are grateful for his contribution to our progress so far.”

Sabitzer managed 18 appearances under Erik ten Hag and picked up a Carabao Cup medal in Man Utd’s win over Newcastle United at Wembley Stadium in February.

He scored a backheel against Fulham to help the club reach June’s FA Cup final, as well as scoring his penalty in the semi-final against Brighton & Hove Albion.

He netted twice in the Europa League last-eight first-leg clash with Sevilla before Utd were eliminated.

It is understood no decision has been made over Sabitzer’s long-term future, but the club are now in discussions with Bayern Munich over the player’s rehabilitation.
