Inter Milan can be a ‘problem’ for Manchester City because they play ‘exact same formation as Brentford’ – Rio Ferdinand

Manchester City’s status as favourites in the Champions League final against Inter was never in doubt.

If the underdogs are to spring a surprise in Istanbul, BT pundit and former England captain Rio Ferdinand thinks it may come down to a tactical decision.

Simone Inzaghi opted for a 3-5-2 shape to start the final, an approach that is similar to that of Brentford. While Brentford may not be an obvious comparison to draw in moments before a Champions League final, Thomas Frank’s side actually beat City home and away in the Premier League this season.

“One key thing to look at as to why this Inter team will be a problem is they play the exact same formation that Brentford played,” said Ferdinand.

“And they beat Manchester City twice this season.”

Ferdinand pointed out that the omission of England defender Kyle Walker from City’s starting line-up was a “big, big decision”.

Former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas said to leave Walker out was a “tough” call for Guardiola.

“Kyle Walker was playing very, very well lately. I think he dealt with Vinicius [Real Madrid striker] really well. He is one of the most powerful defenders you can find in world football right now,” he continued.

“I think Pep talks about proper defenders nowadays; maybe he sees Kyle more as a defender with a mentality for going forward, I’ve no idea. Or maybe to go more on the front foot he prefers defenders who stay more on their feet. I’m sure he has his ideas.”

Ferdinand believes that Walker will be hurt by his manager’s decision.

He said: “He will be absolutely fuming, there is no doubt in my mind.

“I mean, he looks quite calm and composed but inside I can imagine his blood will be boiling because he’s been integral to them getting here. That game against Real Madrid he was outstanding in both legs. So he’ll be disappointed but it’s a squad game and you have to accept it.”

Former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott said it could take “weeks” or “years” for Walker to understand the decision.

“Pep picks players based on opposition and I think the way Inter will set up with two recognised strikers, I think the capabilities of Akanje and Ake will suit that more so.”

Ferdinand also pointed out the importance of John Stones and Rodri preventing City being exploited in counter-attacking phases.

He went on to clarify that Inter’s dual strikers – Edin Dzeko and Lautaro Martinez – would need to win their personal battles in those situations.

Earlier, Guardiola admitted that he believes he needs to win another Champions League title in order to cement his place in history.
