Jannik Sinner breezes past Emil Ruusuvuori in straight sets to progress to Miami Open semi-finals

Jannik Sinner is through to the semi-finals of the Miami Open for the second time in his career after a 6-3 6-1 win over Emil Ruusuvuori.

Sinner has continued to build on his fine form after a semi-final run at Indian Wells earlier this month by defeating the Finn in a rain-disrupted match in straight sets, winning 95 per cent of his points on his first serve.

The Italian will face either world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz or No. 9 seed Taylor Fritz, both opponents he faced in California, in the last four.

“I think we both played very well,” The world No. 11 said after the match.

“I just think that the important points I won today and it’s never easy when you are up and you get interrupted.

“But I came back, I felt great on court, the conditions were a bit different. It was more humid and the balls were a bit heavier but I was very happy with my level today.”

After saving a break point in the fourth game, Sinner took the early break in the very next game to move into a 3-2 lead after Ruusuvuori clattered a forehand into the net.

Ruusuvuori could not find a breakthrough on the Sinner serve who was controlled and aggressive from the back of the court and he finished off the opening set with a fine cross-court return to take the opening set in 36 minutes.

The errors kept coming from Ruusuvuori at the start of the second set and he lashed a forehand out which handed Sinner another break to go 2-0 up.

A rain delay then followed which lasted two hours and 13 minutes, but it did little to disturb Sinner’s rhythm as he continued to pull Ruusuvuori around the court.

Sinner was able to keep forcing errors from his opponent and he went a double break up when Ruusuvuori hit a forehand long to serve for the match.

The 21-year-old confidently served the match out with an ace and maintained his record of not dropping a set at this year’s tournament.
