Jason Mraz’s ex-wife helped him accept ‘two spirit’ sexuality

Jason Mraz revealed in a new interview that working through the “shame” and “guilt” of his divorce from ex-wife Christina Carano helped him accept his sexuality.

“I had to play out a lot of other scenarios before I arrived here,” Mraz, 46, told GLAAD magazine. “It’s both hard to do those and hard to unravel those, and what I’m basically describing is a divorce, you know? And that’s very hard. You carry a lot of shame and guilt.”

Since coming out as a member of the LGBTQ community in 2018, the “I’m Yours” singer revealed that he spent a lot of time healing past relationships.

“You want to heal as many relationships of the past as possible and, at the same time, step into this new acceptance and new identity or whatever I’m claiming,” Mraz said. “And that’s also hard.”

According to Mraz, who is currently competing on Season 32 of “Dancing With the Stars,” being in the running for the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy has also helped him accept his new lifestyle.

Singer and songwriter Jason Mraz revealed Monday that he had to come to terms with his “guilt and shame” before feeling like he could come out as bisexual.

“All day, you’re looking at yourself in the mirror, and that can be hard for anybody, any human, to accept themselves looking in the mirror,” Mraz explained. “On top of it, then my partner is asking me to move in ways that I’ve never moved before, and my reaction is, ‘I look silly.’”

“Then you break through that and it’s like, ‘OK, I feel kinda cool.’ And then it eventually becomes confidence, and so it is a journey,” the singer noted, adding that “dance is an amazing medium for that transformation and for that accepting of one’s self.”

Mraz’s fellow “DWTS” competitor — “Vanderpump Rules” star Ariana Madix, who is bisexual, commented her support for the singer on GLAAD’s Instagram post featuring his interview.

“Yessssss the bi representation this season is 🔥🔥,” Madix, 38, wrote.

The Grammy winner previously told Billboard in 2018 that he once had a sexual encounter with a man while dating Carano, whom he married in 2015. (He revealed earlier this year that they divorced.)

“I’ve had experiences with men, even while I was dating the woman who became my wife,” Mraz said at the time. “It was like, ‘Wow, does that mean I am gay?’”

“My wife laid it out for me,” Mraz explained to the outlet. “She calls it ‘two spirit,’ which is what the Native Americans call someone who can love both man and woman. I really like that.” (“Two spirit” is a term for someone who can love both men and women.)

Prior to his Billboard interview, the singer sparked some speculation regarding his sexuality after publishing a now-deleted poem dedicated to Pride Month for the publication.

“We still have a long way to go,” Mraz wrote.”But know / I am bi your side. / All ways.”
