Jay Vine the latest Vuelta a Espana casualty in chaotic Stage 6, to undergo check-up at hospital
Team Emirates UAE rider Jay Vine withdrew from the Vuelta a Espana after crashing out in Stage 6 of the Grand Tour, in a day that saw a number of casualties.
Thursday’s action saw plenty of riders suffer from accidents, when a crash in the peloton saw Lenny Martinez, Wilco Kelderman and Eduardo Sepulveda – sporting the polka dot jersey – amongst those who fell to the floor at speed.
That led to a number of withdrawals, and ahead of the first climb at the Puerto de Arenillas, Vine was part of another crash in a chaotic session.
Lorenzo Milesi was another victim, as the dsm rider, and Andrea Bagioli (Soudal-QuickStep) also recorded a DNF.
Andrea Vendrame (AG2R-Citroen) pulled out as the peloton took a beating.
Australian rider Vine has now exited the Spanish event prematurely for two years in a row.
His team wrote on Twitter: “Unfortunately, @JayVine3 has been forced to abandon the #LaVuelta23 following a crash on stage 6.
“He is en-route to hospital to be checked over. Further update to follow. #WeAreUAE”
He was reportedly so badly hurt in his fall that he had to travel to hospital for further examination, having won two stages in 2022.
