‘Jeopardy!’ fans skewer contestants over Betty White flub: ‘Good grief!’
St. Olaf would be very disappointed.
None of the players on Friday’s episode of “Jeopardy!” correctly answered a $400 clue about late American treasure Betty White in the “Everything’s Coming Up Rose” category.
“In 1986 she won an Emmy Award for playing Rose Nylund on ‘The Golden Girls,’” host Mayim Bialik, 47, read the clue.
Contestant Ashwin Phadnis, an attorney from Hillsdale, NJ, buzzed in: “Who is McClanahan?”
“Who is Bea Arthur?” replied Brian Alzua, a biocompatibility scientist from Minneapolis. (Minnesota is Rose’s home state.)
Returning champion Hannah Wilson, a Chicago data scientist, did not even attempt to guess, as Bialik filled an awkward silence with the correct answer: “Betty White.”
The late actress died of natural causes on Dec. 31, 2021, at the age of 99. She portrayed Rose Nylund on the NBC sitcom for seven seasons, from 1985 to 1992.
Rue McClanahan, Bea Arthur and Estelle Getty also starred.
“Golden Girls” fans slammed the brainiacs for not knowing this information.
“These #Jeopardy contestants are gonna get roasted for not knowing Betty White was the correct question,” one Twitter user correctly predicted.
“I can’t believe I’m watching jeopardy and not a single one of the 3 contestants knew that Betty White played Rose Nylund on golden girls…I’m 22, that show came out well before my time and even I knew that cause I’ve watched the whole show and Betty is an icon!!” one cultured fan wrote.
“Especially after the other two stars were off the board. Good grief!” another expressed.
“How did none of the Jeopardy contestants know that Betty White played Rose on The Golden Girls?! Is there any hope at all for America?” another asked.
Yet another added: “I am BEYOND offended no one knew Betty White.”
One fan claimed they didn’t even watch the show and still guessed correctly: “Yelling betty white & never saw golden girls.”
Alzua even reacted to the criticism on Twitter, claiming: “I would just like to say, that YES, I KNOW WHO BETTY WHITE IS, sorry I didn’t know her CHARACTER NAME!!”
Wilson won Friday’s episode for a three-day total of $90,601.
Earlier this week, “Jeopardy!” fans blasted the show for a “misleading” final clue that stumped contestants.
Meanwhile, host Ken Jennings, 48, faced fans’ wrath for a “dumb” category.
