Jessie Diggins wraps up crystal globe in style as Harald Oestberg Amundsen holds on Falun, Sweden

Jessie Diggins only needed a top-20 finish in the final race of the Cross-Country World Cup season to clinch the crystal globe, but the American did much better than that.

In the 20km mass start free in Falun, Diggins took victory by 0.9 seconds from Heidi Weng to wrap up her second large crystal globe.

Linn Svahn was the only person who could deny her the overall title but Diggins was the big favourite over the distance event.

And she lived up to the billing, taking the win ahead of Weng with another Norwegian, Anne Kjersti Kalvaa completing the podium.

‘Absolutely impecable’ – Klaebo triumphs in men’s cross-country sprint in Drammen

Svahn, who has won four sprint events this season to take the small crystal globe, could only finish down in 26th, but still ends the season comfortably in second in the overall standings with compatriot Frida Karlsson in third.

Diggins said: “It’s been a hard year, and today my only goal was to have the most fun, and I really did.

“I was smiling at the coaches out there. I just wanted to finish with nothing left. That was really painful.”

The men’s 20km mass start free was rather more dramatic as Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo clinched a seventh successive World Cup victory.

His chances of overhauling Harald Oestberg Amundsen in the race for the large crystal globe were slim and despite the victory, Amundsen did enough to take the title.

Klaebo showed his finishing speed to lead home a Norwegian 1-2-3, beating Gjoeran Tefre by 0.4 seconds with Martin Loewstroem Nyenget in third.

Amundsen finished back in 17th, but that was enough to take the overall title by 54 points.
