Jill Biden tests negative for COVID after rebound case

First Lady Jill Biden tested negative for COVID-19 on Monday and will return to the White House Tuesday after isolating for nearly a week due to a “rebound” case of the virus, her communications director announced.

Biden, 71, tested positive for the virus a second time on Aug. 24 and had been isolating at her family’s home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware since that Wednesday.

She had first tested positive on Aug. 15 after experiencing “cold-like symptoms” near the end of her visit to Kiawah Island in South Carolina with President Joe Biden and was prescribed the antiviral drug Paxlovid.

The first lady didn’t have any reemergence of symptoms in her second go-around with COVID-19, her office previously said.

She and the president have each received two doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine as well as two booster shots.

President Biden, 79, who had also gotten COVID twice in a short span of time in July, was identified as a close contact to his wife and was taking additional measures to stop any potential spread.

As a precaution, he was undergoing more frequent testing and his office said he would wear a mask for 10 days when around others indoors. However, he was seen maskless hugging supporters and taking selfies with them at an indoor rally on Thursday in the Washington suburbs.

The president tested positive for COVID on July 21, shortly after returning from a trip to the Middle East. He tested negative five days after his initial infection, but also experienced a “rebound” case of the coronavirus days later.
