‘John Wick’ prequel ‘The Continental’ is missing key star

Peacock released the first look at “The Continental: From the World of John Wick” on Wednesday, also revealing that the long-awaited project will arrive in September.

The three-part prequel stars Mel Gibson — though he is absent from the 45-second trailer — Colin Woodell and Mishel Prada, but not John Wick himself, Keanu Reeves.

Woodell portrays Winston Scott in “The Continental,” who is a young version of the Continental Hotel owner played by Ian McShane in the Reeves films.

Rated TV-MA, the show’s official description reads: “The three-part event will explore the origin behind the iconic hotel-for-assassins centerpiece of the ‘John Wick’ universe through the eyes and actions of a young Winston Scott, as he’s dragged into the Hell-scape of 1970s New York City to face a past he thought he’d left behind.

“Winston charts a deadly course through the hotel’s mysterious underworld in a harrowing attempt to seize the hotel where he will eventually take his future throne,” it continues.

The prequel takes place nearly 40 years before the “John Wick” films.

Ben Robson, Hubert Point-Du Jour, Nhung Kate, Jessica Allain, Ayomide Adegun, Jeremy Bobb and Peter Greene round out the cast.

This will be the controversial Gibson’s first TV role since the 2004 ABC comedy “Complete Savages.”

“The Continental” has been in the works since 2018. It is written and executive-produced by Greg Coolidge, Kirk Ward and Shawn Simmons.

Albert Hughes directed episodes one and three, while Charlotte Brändström handled the second.

While Reeves is sitting this prequel out, Lionsgate is not ready to say goodbye to the “John Wick” films after the success of “John Wick 4.”

The studio has already greenlighted the fourth movie’s spinoff “Ballerina,” starring Ana de Armas and set for release on June 7, 2024.
