Josko Gvardiol names Liverpool as ‘dream’ club amid £110 million transfer battle between Chelsea and Spurs

Josko Gvardiol has called Liverpool his “dream club” as potential suitors battle for the RB Leipzig defender’s signature.

The 20-year-old, who impressed for eventual third-placed side Croatia at the World Cup in Qatar, is reportedly the subject of a transfer battle between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

The defender’s price tag could rise as high as his release clause of £110 million as the London clubs look to bolster their defences for the remainder of the season.

However, Gvardiol has dealt a blow for both Chelsea and Spurs, after naming Liverpool his “dream club”.

“My dream club? That would definitely be Liverpool,” he told Croatian TV channel RTLDanas. “Since I was little, I watched a lot of their matches with my dad.

“We covered every season in detail. It is a club that has remained in my heart”.

Despite the comments, Gvardiol has revealed that he is in no rush to move on from the German club, and is focused on the remainder of the Bundesliga season.

“I’m not in a hurry,” he explained. “I’m at Leipzig and we still have six months to finish the season and to win something. And then we will look further to the future.”

He also confirmed conversations with Chelsea that took place late in the summer window, revealing that talks between the club and the player’s side would resurface in the winter.

“Last summer a transfer was close and they simply kept me. I hope to spend these six months with them [Leipzig],” he said. “Chelsea did not give up, but it was agreed that we would go for the winter.

“Winter has come, so we need to see what and how to proceed, but it’s okay, there’s still plenty of time, so we’ll see.

“Nobody presented anything to me. But I’m not in a hurry, we have time, let them arrange the plan and we’ll see.”

Liverpool themselves could yet enter the race after Jurgen Klopp confirmed Virgil Van Dijk will miss “more than a month” through injury.

The Dutch defender sustained a hamstring injury in the first half of Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat at Brentford on Monday and was withdrawn at half-time.

As things stand, it’s understood that Chelsea and Spurs are the clubs in the race for Gvardiol.

The Blues have already signed a defender this window, recruiting Benoit Badiashile from Monaco, and spent £75 million on Wesley Fofana in the summer – he is currently injured.
