JR Majewski drops out of Ohio race after ‘retarded’ slur
Embattled MAGA rapper JR Majewski, who has been accused of lying about his military service and recently joked that Special Olympics athletes were “f—ing retarded,” has bowed out of a competitive Ohio congressional race where he had been a leading GOP candidate.
Majewski blamed the “Deep State” for his decision to drop out of contention from the 9th District race — but House Republican leadership is likely breathing a sign of relief.
The district is one of the few occupied by a Democrat despite residents voting for Donald Trump in 2020, and the GOP is now eyeing the seat as a potential pickup for 2024.
“While I know I would win, and have a great shot in the general election now that my record has been cleared, it is inevitable that the Deep State will do whatever it takes to fight against me,” Majewski said.
“Even going as far as attacking my family and once again accusing me of stolen valor.”
That exit came days after Majewski denied rumors that he intended to drop out amid pressure from top Republican brass.
He faced blowback last month when he ripped Special Olympics athletes as “f—ing retarded” when comparing them to Democrats.
He apologized for the remarks, and said he was considering dropping out as a result.
Majewski rose to MAGA fame in 2021 with a diss track titled “Let’s Go Brandon” after the phrase used to mock President Biden.
In the 2022 Midterms, he campaigned as a brash pro-Trump Air Force combat veteran. But, he lost to incumbent Democrat Rep. Marcy Kaptur by roughly 57% to 43% in the northern Ohio district which hugs Lake Eerie.
Around that time, FiveThirtyEight ranked the district, which used to tout a double-digit advantage for Democrats, as leaning Republican by six percentage points. The Cook Political Report rated the seat as “lean Democrat” for the 2024 cycle while Majewski remained in the race.
Kaptur, 77, has held that seat since 1983 and has continued to prevail in elections even as Ohio has shifted considerably to the right over. She is one of five House Democrats serving in a district that former President Donald Trump won in 2020.
Majewski had been endorsed by Ohio native biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. He saw his 2022 bid upended by a damning September article from the Associated Press that raised major questions about his service record in Afghanistan.
That article alleged that records showed he was loading planes in Qatar around the time he claimed to have been on a combat tour in Afghanistan.
Majewski has vehemently disputed that report and argued that his missions in Afghanistan were classified. The Associated Press also reported that he was barred from reenlisting in the Air Force because of a DUI arrest.
After the report surfaced, Republicans slashed funding for him — a move that he blamed his loss.
Despite that controversy, Majewski launched another bid for the seat last year, much to the chagrin of Republican Party leadres.
House Speaker Mike Johnson flagged those remarks to former President Donald Trump during a meeting at Mar-a-Lago, seeking his help in dealing with Majewski, Politico reported.
It is not clear if Trump had any influence on Majewski’s decision to suspend his campaign.
Republicans have a threadbare six-seat majority in the lower chamber. They are facing a difficult map in 2024 due to key retirements and redistricting changes in New York.
Top GOP brass has been placing an increased focus on candidate quality this cycle after a lackluster performance in 2022.
