Judd Trump says he could wear glove like Kyren Wilson to combat ‘hot and sticky’ conditions at English Open

Judd Trump suggested he might follow Kyren Wilson in wearing a glove at snooker tournaments after overcoming “hot and sticky” conditions to win his first-round match at the English Open.

However, the former world No. 1 wasn’t entirely satisfied with his performance and said the conditions at the arena played a part.

“I found it tricky, it was very hot out there,” he told Eurosport.

“I just did the best I could with what I had. I wasn’t going to punish myself, I was just trying to stay in a good zone. There were balls missed but there were reasons for that. Through to the next round and hopefully it’s a bit cooler.”

Trump started with a 102 break and followed up with two half-century breaks as he safely advanced.

He said he had thoughts of a 147 break in the fourth frame but was put off by his hands being a “bit sticky”.

“When he left it I was thinking 147,” said Trump.

“When you’re a bit more relaxed it comes a bit easier. I was thinking it from the start but wasn’t able to get through the cue through, my hands were a bit sticky.

“Maybe I need to take Kyren’s advice and get a glove for these tournaments.

“I haven’t tried it but if it continues to be this bad then something needs to be done. It might have to go that way at some point if it helps.”

Part of the issue at recent events seems to be the unseasonably warm weather across much of England.

“The tables play so much nicer when it gets to the winter period and you’ve got a bit of heating on,” added Trump.

“When the temperature is hot outside and you have air con on, the table is wet and not nice. For me the best tournament is the Masters, I think the conditions are perfect there.

“I think they should have had the venue a bit cooler than it was today.

“It’s difficult because when you come to the big competitions you want it to be nice, so it’s obviously disappointing not to feel that you can play your best because you want to give the crowd something to cheer about. They have waited around all day until late at night and there was great support out there.

“I know I seem to thrive on good conditions like the Masters, for me it’s just about battling through the first few rounds to get some momentum.”

Trump faces Scott Donaldson in the second round on Tuesday.
