Julian Sands’ family says he’s ‘in our hearts’ 6 months after actor went missing
Julian Sands’ family has spoken out for the first time since the actor went missing while hiking California’s Mount Baldy six months ago.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff shared his family’s message Wednesday on Twitter after more than 80 search and rescue volunteers, deputies and staff were unsuccessful in their search for Sands, 65, on June 17.
“We are deeply grateful to the search teams and coordinators who have worked tirelessly to find Julian,” the statement reads.
“We continue to hold Julian in our hearts, with bright memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and as an original and collaborative performer.”
The Post has contacted representatives for Sands and the San Bernardino County Sheriff for comment.
The “A Room With a View” star and experienced outdoorsman was reported missing around the Mount Baldy area on Jan. 13.
Mount Baldy is one of the highest peaks within the San Gabriel Mountains, which is located about 40 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles.
“Our heartfelt thanks to the compassionate members of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department who are coordinating the search for our beloved Julian, not least the heroic search teams listed below who are braving difficult conditions on the ground and in the air to bring Julian home,” Sands’ family said in a statement on Jan. 23.
“We are deeply touched by the outpouring of love and support,” they added.
Last Saturday’s search was one of eight missions to find Sands, along with eight other operations, the sheriff’s department said.
Searches were temporarily suspended back in February due to extreme winter weather conditions in the West.
“Despite the recent warmer weather, portions of the mountain remain inaccessible due to extreme alpine conditions. Multiple areas include steep terrain and ravines, which still have 10 plus feet of ice and snow,” the department wrote in a release last week.
His case remains open, and search efforts will continue in a limited capacity, according to the sheriff’s department.
Sands had major roles in 1989′s “Warlock,” 1990′s “Arachnophobia,” 1991′s “Naked Lunch,” 1993′s “Boxing Helena” and “Leaving Las Vegas” in 1995, as well as smaller roles more recently.
