Jurgen Klopp savours ‘outstanding’ and ‘perfect’ Liverpool 7-0 hammering of Manchester United

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp described his side’s 7-0 win over Manchester United as “outstanding” and “perfect” in a “spectacular football game”.

The Reds went into the game at Anfield on the back foot and were gazing up at their big rivals in the Premier League table.

United, by contrast, arrived at Anfield on the back of a first trophy of the Erik ten Hag era with victory in the Carabao Cup final.

Liverpool fans could therefore have been forgiven for being wary ahead of the encounter, but their side ripped up the form book with a dominant win.

The game tipped in the Reds’ favour on the back of Cody Gakpo’s goal on the stroke of half-time, and from that moment Liverpool went into overdrive.

Two goals for Mo Salah, one each for Darwin Nunez and Roberto Firmino, and a second for Gakpo sealed a stunning 7-0 victory.

Klopp was understandably elated with the performance and the scoreline at Anfield.

“No words. Spectacular football game. Outstanding,” Klopp told Sky Sports of the club’s biggest win against United. “The start of the game was what we needed, on the front foot, super-lively, super-active, top football against the team in form.

“The second-half, the start was pretty good, the finish was pretty good, everything was pretty good. That’s football, it can happen.

“It is important that we played well and performed, and all the guys up front score and Bobby [Firmino] comes on and scores.

“It is all very important, top performances. For tonight it was perfect.

“We don’t talk about the scoreline, just about the performance. For tonight it was perfect.”

The win moved Liverpool to within seven points of United, who sit in the fourth and final Champions League qualification spot, and Klopp is hopeful it can spur his side on.

“It was the push we wanted,” Klopp said. “It puts us in the right direction. Everyone has to know we are still around. It wasn’t the case for a while but tonight was a proper show of what we could be and what we can be and what we have to be from now on.

“That is very important for us – 13 games to come? A lot of points to go for. Tonight it was perfect.”

Salah’s goals took him beyond Robbie Fowler as Liverpool’s record goalscorer in the Premier League, and Klopp was thrilled for the Egyptian.

“129 goals, that is insane,” Klopp said. “What an unbelievable number.

“He is a special player. We appreciate him now but in the future people will look back and be wow, we witnessed something really special.”
