Fontaine scored an incredible 30 goals in just 21 games for his country, including his record streak at Sweden in 1958 as France finished third.

Fontaine is joint-fourth on the all-time scoring list at a World Cup, level with Lionel Messi, despite only playing at one World Cup.

His remarkable run at Sweden 1958 began with a hat-trick in the 7-3 win over Paraguay in the group stage, with the striker adding braces in the 3-2 defeat to Yugoslavia and 2-1 triumph over Scotland.

He then bagged another double in the 4-0 win over Northern Ireland in the quarter-finals, before netting again as France suffered a semi-final exit to Brazil in a 5-2 loss.

Undeterred, Fontaine signed off his campaign with four goals in the 6-3 win over West Germany in the third-place play-off to bring up his extraordinary tally of 13.

Pele, part of the triumphant Brazil side in 1958, was the joint-second top scorer with six goals.
