Justin Timberlake drags his ‘It’s Gonna Be May’ meme with TikTok trend
It’s gonna be ME.
*NSYNC frontman Justin Timberlake took to TikTok Sunday and admitted that his mispronunciation of the word “me” in his hit 2000s song “It’s Gonna Be Me” has haunted him over the years.
The video, which as of Monday has been viewed nearly 16 million times, shows the former boy band member answering the video prompt.
“What’s a word you pronounced incorrectly one time and it still haunts you to this day?” asked TikTok user Gabi Hartman.
The video then switches over to Timberlake, 42, wearing a black tank top and necklace.
“Um, Me,” smiled the “Cry Me a River” singer before abruptly ending the video.
The lyric, which sounds like “It’s gonna be may,” has become a widely used meme in the internet community generally used toward the end of April or on the first day of May.
Despite Timberlake begging fans to use the correct pronunciation, many have refused.
“It will forever be “Mayyyyyyyy,” commented one fan.
“I will never not share the ‘it’s gonna be May’ meme,” joked another.
“‘It’s gunna be may,’ will be in our lives forever,” declared a third user.
One fan even went as far as to call it “the most epic mispronunciation ever!”
The revelation, however, did take at least one user by surprise.
“Wait… it was supposed to be ‘it’s gonna be me’ I’m screaming,” claimed the user, who later added that she “was all alt-rock and punk back then” and just assumed the song was about a girl named May.
The song, which was released on June 13, 2000, was a part of the group’s third studio album, “No Strings Attached,” and landed at No. 18 on Billboard’s Hot 100.
Timberlake recently reunited with his former bandmates — Joey Fatone, 46, Lance Bass, 44, JC Chasez, 47, and Chris Kirkpatrick, 51 — at the MTV Video Music Awards last week. They presented Taylor Swift with the award for Best Pop Video at the ceremony, and revealed the next day that they are dropping a new track, “Better Place,” for Timberlake’s new “Trolls Band Together” movie.
The band previously attended their Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony together in 2018 and briefly performed during Timberlake’s Video Vanguard Award VMA medley in 2013.
