Kansas City Chiefs fan seen in cuffs after shooting seeks to clear name

A Kansas City Chiefs fan who was detained at the team’s Super Bowl victory parade has spoken out to clear his name after social media users wrongly identified him as one of the gunmen in the deadly shooting that broke out during the festivities – saying: “I was just enjoying myself like everybody else.”

Denton Loudermill, a father from Olathe, Kansas, was photographed in a red sweatshirt surrounded by police officers shortly after the mass shooting erupted at the rally on Wednesday.

He went viral for all the wrong reasons, with captions falsely claiming he was one of the gunmen who were apprehended during the ensuing chaos, KSHB reported.

“I just want to clear my name that I had nothing to do with anything,” Loudermill said at a press conference Saturday

“I was just enjoying myself like everybody else, but other than that, I was out there not to harm anybody. I was just enjoying the parade like everybody else,” he said.

Loudermill, who had several drinks on the tragic day, and was detained for being intoxicated and not moving away from the crime scene, his attorney LaRonna Lassiter Saunders said, KMBC reported.

“Mr. Denton had several drinks, but so did a half million other people, including some of the Chiefs players. It’s not a crime. It doesn’t make you a mass shooter,” Lassiter Saunders told reporters.

She said police eventually released him without issuing a citation or an official arrest – but noted that online accounts have put his life in danger.

“Mr. Denton has received death threats over a lie, over misinformation,” the lawyer said. “He didn’t do anything wrong. He did not commit a crime. So please, run, tell that. Get the truth out there. Help us clear his name. Help us save his life.”

“We want to offer our condolences to Ms. Lopez-Galvan and her family, and to the other 22 victims and their families that were impacted by this horrible tragedy,” Lassiter Saunders said.

“They are living a true nightmare right now. The other person that would be living a nightmare would be Mr. Denton because he’s the one accused of being the shooter at that event,” she added.

Police told KSHB in a statement: “There were many people detained at one time or another on Wednesday. Some of the detainments could result in future charges unrelated to the shooting.

“No one who is believed to be involved in the shooting has been released,” police added.

Two minors have been charged in connection with the shooting, which left at least 11 children dead.

“The juveniles are currently detained in secure detention at the Juvenile Detention Center on gun related and resisting arrest charges,” the Jackson County Family Court Division said in a statement.

“It is anticipated that additional charges are expected in the future as the investigation by the Kansas City Police Department continues,” it added.
