Kansas woman shot by stray bullet think rollover on couch saved her life

A Kansas woman believes she escaped death when the wise voice inside her head told her to turn over on the couch just before her upstairs neighbor inadvertently shot his gun into her apartment.

Mary Schulte, 64, told WDAF this week she thinks the gunshot wound she suffered Saturday wasn’t life-altering because it struck her on the side instead of straight on after she rolled over on her sofa while resting.

Mary Schulte was shot Saturday, but was released the same day.

“I think I heard something interesting, all I know is my voice told me to roll over and so I did — and boom,” Schulte reportedly said.

Schulte heard a loud noise, and then a “hot feeling” that ended up being a bullet.

“While I was running to the kitchen to get a towel, a bullet fell into my hand,” Schulte said.

The Overland Park resident was taken to the hospital and released the same day.

“If it had been a few seconds earlier, it would have been here and it would have been straight,” she said, pointing to her chest.

“I looked up and said ‘thank you very much,’ absolutely my faith was renewed.”

Authorities are investigating the shooting, and warned gun owners to practice caution.

“Something like this could have ended worse,” Overland Park police spokesperson John Lacy told the news station.

“Like I said earlier – this could have been a death. If you purchase a firearm, you need to know how to work that firearm, and it’s another thing that everyone that has a firearm probably shouldn’t have a firearm.”

Schulte doesn’t appear to want her careless neighbor punished.

“My job is to make a better world and help everyone I can and that includes people who accidently shoot me,” Schulte said.
