Kate Middleton salutes Princess Diana’s timeless style at Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

The Duchess of Cambridge honored Princess Diana by mirroring her timeless fashion during Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee.

Kate Middleton, 40, was seen wearing a white coat dress modeled along the lines of a gentleman’s suit jacket with a crossover lapel and wide, dish-style hat featuring a navy blue contrasting band.

The chic look appears to be a subtle tribute to her late mother-in-law, who wore a similar ensemble while attending to her royal duties.

The outfit is specifically being compared to a look worn by Diana in 1991 to watch a parade of military personnel who had served in the Gulf War.

Diana’s white coat dress also featured a similar crossover closure and was styled with a large, white dish-style hat with a contrasting dark brim.

The duchess’ hat is also strikingly similar to one worn by Diana on a visit to Dubai in 1989 and created by Philip Somerville, who is credited with pushing the princess away from the small hats of the 1980s to the wide-brimmed hats of the ’90s.

No look is complete without accessories, of course. Middleton finished off her outfit with diamond and sapphire jewels, including a pair of earrings and a necklace pendant that are reported to have been made from pieces left to Prince William when his mother died in 1997.

Middleton has been known to honor the late princess in her fashion choices by wearing similar looks or re-wearing the royal’s accessories. The Jubilee outfit also follows Middleton’s recent trend of re-wearing her own pieces.

Princess Diana also wore a crisp, white ensemble while appearing with Queen Elizabeth and a young Prince Harry during the Trooping the Colour ceremony in 1992.

The duchess has worn this coat dress once before at a reception for G7 leaders in 2021. It is reported to have been made by the late designer Alexander McQueen, who created her wedding dress. The jewels have also been previously worn by Middleton.

The Platinum Jubilee marks seven decades that the 96-year-old queen has ruled. Her reign is the longest a monarch has ever ruled Great Britain and will be observed with a four-day public holiday from June 2 until June 5.

This year’s annual celebration makes history as the first to see the queen sit out one of the kickoff events, a military parade on Thursday called Trooping the Colour.

Middleton appeared at the parade with her three children — Prince George, 8, Princess Charlotte, 7, and Prince Louis, 4 — as well as her husband, Prince William, 39.

The three-day celebration ends on Sunday with a party at Buckingham Palace.
