Kentucky mom who rarely plays lottery wins $2M Powerball

A Kentucky mom of three and occasional lottery player struck gold earlier this month after she was persuaded by her coworkers to buy a ticket.

Jacalyn Armstrong’s family thought she was going to relay news of Baby No. 4 after she returned to work from an OB-GYN appointment on Oct. 4 — not that she won the $2 million Powerball jackpot.

“I told him I had some news, and at first, he didn’t believe me,” Armstrong laughed, recalling the moment she told her husband Jonathan.

“You could tell I was in tears, and he thought I was going to tell him I was pregnant. My mom thought the same thing when I called her. I was like, ‘What is wrong with you all?’” she told the Kentucky Lottery as their youngest son was born six months ago.

The Oak Grove resident said she rarely plays the lottery, but after hearing her coworkers talking about it, she decided to get six Powerball tickets for herself.

“When it [jackpot] gets big, my co-workers talk about it,” she said. “One of them even said, “You should buy a ticket.””

Her winning ticket matched all five white ball numbers — earning her $1 million. Since she added the Power Play, it bumped up her earnings to $2 million.

The family plans to use the money to visit Jonathan Armstrong’s family in Pennsylvania over fall break, as well as buy a bigger home and a new car. Some of the money will also be donated to their church.
