King Charles trips on fake cemetery grass as Camilla watches
The leaves aren’t the only things that are falling down this autumn.
King Charles, 74, and his wife, Queen Camilla, 76, were visiting the Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery in Nairobi, Kenya, Wednesday when the monarch almost took a nasty spill on some faux grass.
In a video captured by the media, the sovereign was strolling on a walkway filled with the artificial greenery until he tripped.
Camilla stuck her hand out to grab him before he fully went down.
Once Charles steadied himself, he plopped on his sunglasses and kept on walking.
The duo met with Kenyan war veterans who fought for the English in World War II.
The couple have been in the area since Tuesday and will stay for five days.
It is the former Prince of Wales’ first state visit to Kenya since the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September 2022.
Kenya gained their independence in 1963 from Britain as the country had been under English rule since 1895.
Citizens have wondered if Charles would formally apologize for the colonization.
At a state banquet held Tuesday hosted by president William Ruto, the king said: “There were abhorrent and unjustifiable acts of violence committed against Kenyans as they waged … a painful struggle for independence and sovereignty. And for that, there can be no excuse.”
Laura Trevelyan — a former BBC journalist — stated Monday that Charles should directly express remorse for his ancestors’ involvement with the transatlantic slave trade.
“I would hope very much that in the coming years, he can apologize for the royal family’s historic links to slavery and make a meaningful financial gesture that would be seen as reparative,” Trevelyan told People.
“But what that figure is, I have no idea,” she added. “There would be a great healing power to an apology for slavery and some kind of reparative justice strategy from the king.”
Charles’ next international trip will be to the United Arab Emirates for the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference.
He will jet off to Dubai next month to attend the summit for environmental activism.
The king will orate the conference’s opening address, Buckingham Palace announced Wednesday.
Charles and the United Kingdom hosted the 2021 event and he skipped last year’s bash in Egypt.
