King Charles wanted to ‘hide away’ during Easter service: expert
King Charles seemed worried during the royal family’s first Easter service since Queen Elizabeth’s death last year, according to a body language expert.
The 74-year-old monarch showed symptoms of “anxiety” and was spotted “wringing and clasping” his hands as he entered the church, author Judi James said.
“The tension was visible in Charles’s body language as he led the royals to their Easter service for the first time since his mother’s death,” James explained to the Mirror.
“With his brows steepled in the part frown, he shoved one hand into his jacket pocket as though having a desire to hide away.”
The rest of the royal family joined Charles and his wife Camilla for the springtime outing at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor — all coordinating in blue.
Among the members of the family who took in the church service included Prince William, his wife Kate Middleton and their children Louis, Charlotte and George.
Princess Anne’s daughter Zara Tindall, her husband Mike and their daughters Mia and Lena followed closely behind the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
James revealed the group seemed to be in a “more relaxed, celebratory Easter mood.”
She added that Middleton, 41, was self-assured and was proud of her son Louis, 4, according to the pair’s body movements.
“In a very telling move in terms of family hierarchy and just plain old growing up, it was George who walked ahead alone at the front of his family to lead them in, while William walked behind holding Charlotte’s hand and Kate holding onto Louis’,” she said.
“There seemed to be a sudden ripple of warm applause for Kate and Louis, with many fans probably remembering his playfulness at the Jubilee and keen to praise his much more serious and well-behaved body language here.”
“As he strode out, glancing confidently at the fans, Kate glanced down at her son then looked up with a grin of pride that converted to a wide smile at the crowds,” James added.
Other attendees included Prince Edward, his wife Sophie, their son James as well Prince Andrew’s daughters Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie and both of their husbands.
Two members who didn’t reunite with the family for the holiday were Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, as they now live in California with their children, Archie and Lilibet.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made the move to Montecito in 2020 after breaking away from the royals.
However, even before they traveled across the pond to their new home, Markle, 41, had never attended the traditional Easter church event.
In 2018, the pair didn’t go to the liturgy because they were reportedly busy with engagements leading up to their wedding day that May, and opted to celebrate Easter privately.
Just a year later, the former “Suits” actress was heavily pregnant with Archie and she stayed home while Harry went to the chapel alone.
Markle’s first holiday with the royals was in 2017 when they gathered for Christmas at Sandringham.
