Kylian Mbappe shows support for Romelu Lukaku after racist abuse against Juventus – ‘All against racism’

Kylian Mbappe has shown support for Romelu Lukaku and demanded an end to racism after the Inter Milan striker was abused during their 1-1 draw against Juventus.

Lukaku was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for gesturing to the crowd after scoring a penalty in the Italian Cup semi-final.

He held his finger to his lips as if to silence supporters who he says directed racist abuse towards him during the match.

Lukaku’s action angered the Juventus players and a scuffle between the two teams saw the match finish in unsavory fashion, with Juan Cuadrado dismissed for the hosts in Turin, and Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic also sent off.

Reacting to the incident, Mbappe wrote in French on his Instagram story: “2023 and still the same problems. But we’re not going to let it keep happening. All against racism.”

Lukaku also wrote on his social media platforms after the incident, saying: “History repeats. Been through it in 2019… and 2023 again.”

He has urged Serie A to be active on clamping down on discrimination. He said: “I hope the league really take actions for real this time because this beautiful game should be enjoyed by everyone.”

Lukaku’s management company have also spoken out in support of their client.

Roc Nation Sports International president Michael Yorkmack said: “Tonight’s racist remarks made towards Romelu Lukaku by Juventus fans in Turin were beyond despicable and cannot be accepted.

“The Italian authorities must use this opportunity to tackle racism, rather than punish the victim of the abuse.”

“Before, during, and after the penalty, he was subjected to hostile and disgusting racist abuse. Romelu celebrated in the same manner he has previously celebrated goals.

“The referee’s response was to award a yellow card to Romelu. Romelu deserves an apology from Juventus, and I expect the league to condemn the behaviour of this group of Juventus supporters immediately”, Yormack said.

The Italian league have issued a statement, which does not reference Lukaku, but says it “strongly condemns every episode of racism and every form of discrimination.”

“A few people in the stands cannot ruin the soccer show and don’t represent the thoughts of all the fans.”

Meanwhile, Juventus say they are working with authorities to identify supporters who may have been involved.
