Lady Gaga to star in ‘Joker’ sequel alongside Joaquin Phoenix
Lady Gaga is the latest A-lister to join the DC Universe.
The 36-year-old pop superstar announced Thursday that she will star alongside Joaquin Phoenix, 47, in “Joker: Folie à Deux,” which is set to premiere on Oct. 4, 2024.
Mother Monster confirmed the highly anticipated news through a clip posted to social media. The 18-second tease splashes “Phoenix” in black text against a red background, followed by the actor’s blacked-out silhouette.
The word “Gaga” follows, along with her silhouette, before the pair embrace as they twirl to the tune of “Cheek to Cheek” — a song she’s previously covered with her former musical collaborator Tony Bennett. The teaser concludes with the sound of the infamous “Joker” laugh and bold-lettered release date.
“Folie à Deux” — which is French for “Madness For Two” — is the sequel to Phoenix’s “Joker,” in 2019. The film grossed over $1 billion at the box office and won several Oscars in 2020, including Phoenix’s golden statuette for Best Actor.
While Gaga’s character has yet to be confirmed, it’s likely she’ll play Harley Quinn — the Joker’s psychiatrist who becomes his partner in crime.
The upcoming film was written by Scott Silver and Todd Phillips. The latter released the movie’s title — as well as a picture of Phoenix smoking a cigarette and reading through the script — on June 7.
“Barbie” star Margot Robbie brings Quinn to life in the “Suicide Squad” and “Birds of Prey” -side of the DC Comics Extended Universe, while “Big Bang Theory” alum Kaley Cuoco voices the character in HBO Max’s animated series, “Harley Quinn.”
The “Bad Romance” songstress has picked up several high-profile acting gigs in the last few years. Her breakout role alongside Bradly Cooper in 2018’s “A Star Is Born” won multiple Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Original Song” for the movie’s No. 1 radio hit “Shallow.” She also received a nomination for Best Actress.
In 2021, Gaga famously came up with the line “Father, son, House of Gucci” in the biographical crime drama of the same name about the Italian family of fashion.
The Super Bowl Halftime performer is currently on “The Chromatica Ball” tour, which wraps up in Miami on Sept. 17.
The Post has contacted representatives for Gaga and Phoenix for comment.
