Lara Gut-Behrami claims super-G crown in dramatic Alpine Ski World Cup finals battle in Soldeu

Lara Gut-Behrami secured the super-G crystal globe with victory at the Alpine Ski World Cup finals in Soldeu.

On a dramatic day in which a number of racers were in the hunt for the top prize, the Swiss star powered to victory on the day, allowing her to leapfrog Elena Curtoni, who began the day top of the overall standings.

Curtoni’s compatriot, Federica Brignone, was beaten into second, with Norway’s Ragnhild Mowinckel’s run good enough for third place.

The results of the top three on the day were enough for them to finish in the same final positions overall.

Brignone set an early pace of 1:26.92 and couldn’t be overtaken by Corrine Sutter, who finished 0.33 seconds behind.

Mowinckel then wedged herself between the two and into second place with a time of 1:27.17.

But then came Gut-Behrami, who with her eyes firmly locked on the prize, fired herself into the lead with a time of 1:26.70.

The win secured the Olympic champion her fourth World Cup super-G title.

“It’s amazing,” she said afterwards. “It’s been a roller-coaster this season and yeah, I’m happy today.

“I just tried to ski the way the way I can and it happened and it’s an emotional day.

“I’m getting older and getting more emotional, it’s crazy I’m crying all the time but it’s a nice feeling sometimes.

“I just wanted to ski and not have regrets. Sometimes it’s the best way just to stop thinking and ski. I didn’t focus on the lines, I just tried to be fast and this was the good receipt.”

After dominating the headlines during a record-breaking season, Mikaela Shiffrin had a more subdued day, managing a 14th place finish with her run.

Cornelia Huetter, who began the day third overall and also in contention for the top prize, couldn’t make a late impact and came in sixth, dropping down to fifth in the final standings.

It was also a disappointing day for Elena Curtoni, who narrowly missed out on an overall podium finish as she came in 10th in the race.
