Lara Gut-Behrami takes super-G victory in Austria and wins third race of season, Mikaela Shiffrin leads standings
Lara Gut-Behrami claimed her third race win of the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup season with a super-G victory in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee.
The Swiss skier finished 0.25 seconds ahead of Cornelia Huetter, who pipped fellow Austrian Mirjam Puchner to second by just one hundredth of a second on home snow.
Puchner beat out Ragnhild Mowinckel for the final place on the podium by 0.08 seconds, with Michelle Gisin a further 0.01 seconds further back.
Huetter continues to lead the way in the super-G standings following her own victory in Alternmarkt-Zauchensee on Friday, with the Austrian 90 points ahead of Gut-Behrami, who moves ahead of Italian pair Federica Brignone and Sofia Goggia after they could only finish 12th and eighth respectively on Sunday.
“It’s amazing. I’m proud to be winning here again after 13 years in super-G. To be able to be that consistent during those years is unbelievable,” she told FIS.
“I’m enjoying what I’m doing. I know that I’m still here just because I want to be. I have days where I would like to quit – I’d love to go home to have a family and have other things. Other days, I’m like, ‘I will do that in a few more years because I really like that.’ It’s a struggle sometimes. When I’m skiing I’m just trying to do the best that I can.
“I’m super happy about my GS skiing right now. I have a lot of confidence there. In speed, something was missing. These days on this hill have helped me a lot. I can push myself forward and today, finally, I was able to show what I can do.”
Victory in Austria also sees Gut-Behrami climb into the top three in the overall standings, with the Swiss overtaking Petra Vlhova for the final podium place.
Gut-Behrami sits 27 points ahead of the Olympic slalom champion and will have her sights set on Brignone, who is 38 points in front.
Mikaela Shiffrin continues to lead the way with 929 points, an advantage of 142 points.
