Laver Cup 2024: Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev join Carlos Alcaraz in Bjorn Borg’s Team Europe squad

Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev have been named in Team Europe alongside Carlos Alcaraz for the 2024 Laver Cup, taking place in Berlin between September 20 and 22.

Medvedev and Zverev are both previous winners of the competition and join tournament debutant Alcaraz as Team Europe – led by captain Bjorn Borg – aim to wrestle the trophy back from Team World, who won the competition in each of the last two years.

After the selections of Alcaraz, Medvedev and Zverev, the Swede is committing to using a captain’s pick on one or all three of those players, depending on their respective rankings after the French Open.

The top three-ranked players for both sides are guaranteed an invite based on their ATP singles rankings on June 10.

Team Europe and Team USA will both have six players each, and all must play one singles match in the opening two days, but no more than two across the three days. It is also stipulated that a minimum of four players must play a doubles match.

Every match won is worth one point on Friday, two on Saturday, and three on Sunday, with the first team to reach 13 points emerging victorious.

“Team Europe is super motivated to win back the Cup in Berlin,” said Borg.

“With Daniil, Sascha and Carlos on my team, I think we have an excellent chance of making that happen.

“The guys have had an incredible start to the year, and this is a really strong first half of our line-up. I’m thrilled to have these champions in the fold for 2024.”

The 27-year-old featured for Team Europe in Boston three years ago, following up from his first Grand Slam title in that year’s US Open.

Zverev is currently ranked world No. 6 and will be aiming to continue his 100% record in the competition after tasting success in Prague (2017), Chicago (2018), Geneva (2019), and Boston (2021).

“I’m so excited about returning to Laver Cup,” Zverev added.

“The atmosphere is always electric and for the Laver Cup to be at home in Germany, for me in particular, is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“Team World has won the last two Laver Cups so we are highly motivated to bring the Cup back to Europe and hopefully, with the support of the local fans, we can do it on home soil.”

“For me, the most exciting thing about Laver Cup is always the team spirit, because it’s very rare that I get to play team competitions in tennis,” he added.

“Having Carlos and Sascha [Alexander Zverev] on our team will help a lot because they are two of the best players in the world and I’m really excited to try and get Team Europe back to their winning ways.”

Meanwhile, John McEnroe will be targeting a third consecutive victory for Team World following their successes in London and Vancouver in the last two years.

“They [Team Europe] want to win this one badly,” said the Team World captain.

“But guess what? So do we. This is going to be one of the biggest showdowns in tennis this year.”
