LeBron James named as official starter for 24 Hours of Le Mans centenary edition as NBA legend to wave flag

Basketball legend LeBron James will be the official starter for the centenary edition of 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The NBA’s all-time leading scorer will lower the French flag to signal the start of the endurance race at the Circuit de la Sarthe.

James joins a list of celebrities including Rafael Nadal, Brad Pitt and Steve McQueen to have kicked off proceedings at Le Mans.

“There’s nothing like seeing and experiencing sports at their highest level,” said Los Angeles Lakers star James.

“It’s an honour for me to be part of this historic moment in motorsport and help celebrate the centenary of one of the biggest sporting events in the world.

“I look forward to kicking off this iconic race and watching its world-class drivers compete on Le Mans’ global stage.”

The 24 Hours of Le Mans race takes place on Saturday, June 10 from 15:00 UK time.

Toyota have been dominant over the last few years, winning in every one of the last five editions of Le Mans, but could face competition from newcomers Porsche and Ferrari.

“I am thrilled to welcome LeBron James to the 24 Hours of Le Mans Centenary and thank him most sincerely for accepting our invitation,” added Automobile Club de l’Ouest president Pierre Fillon.

“The 24 Hours of Le Mans is a world-renowned event that, in the past, has welcomed some great names from various fields.

“LeBron James is a true sporting legend whose list of achievements and records commands respect and admiration. We are looking forward to introducing him to the unique Le Mans atmosphere and the excitement generated by the centenary of the world’s greatest endurance race.”

The first Le Mans practice session is on Wednesday, June 7.
