Leicester City leapfrog Everton in Premier League relegation battle after ending long wait for win

Leicester City climbed out of the relegation zone at Everton’s expense as Dean Smith’s side came from behind to beat Wolves 2-1 and end a 10-match winless run stretching back to February.

Matheus Cunha’s early opener for Wolves threatened to deepen the Foxes’ misery after a four-match losing run that saw them plummet into the bottom three.

But they rallied and turned the game around as Kelechi Iheanacho levelled from the penalty spot, before Timothy Castagne netted the winner with 15 minutes to go.

Smith was leading Leicester for only the second time since being appointed to replace the sacked Brendan Rodgers, and the first victory of his reign lifted his side into 17th place on 28 points, above Everton on goal difference.

The Toffees were held to a 0-0 draw away to Crystal Palace, stretching their winless away run to 15 games – their longest such streak in 43 years.

England manager Gareth Southgate was in the stands to cast his eye over potential Three Lions call-ups, but he witnessed a dull game where both sides struggled to create openings.

Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze found the net in the second-half but was denied by the offside flag, while Everton had to hold on for the final 10 minutes after Mason Holgate picked up a second yellow.

Everton have now won just twice in their last 33 Premier League away games, but Palace’s revival under Roy Hodgson continued as they now sit nine points clear of the relegation zone in 12th place.

Aston Villa’s five-game winning run came to an end as they required a late Douglas Luiz equaliser to take a point from a 1-1 draw away to Brentford.

Unai Emery’s side have emerged as surprise late contenders for the top four, but they weren’t at their best at the Gtech Community Stadium and Ivan Toney fired the Bees into a deserved lead after 65 minutes.

Luiz met an Emiliano Buendia cut-back to slot home the leveller with three minutes of regulation time remaining as sixth-placed Villa moved five points behind Newcastle in fourth – although the Magpies have two games in hand.

For Brentford, in 10th, the result meant they ended a run of three straight defeats.

Elsewhere, Diogo Jota notched a brace as Liverpool edged a 3-2 thriller against Nottingham Forest where all five goals were scored after the break.
Leeds United’s drift towards the drop zone continued with a 2-1 defeat away to Fulham, as Harry Wilson and Andreas Pereira struck in the second-half for the Cottagers before an own goal from Joao Palhinha.
