‘Let’s do it!’ – Frazer Clarke challenges champion Fabio Wardley after cruising to win over Wach

Frazer Clarke challenged Fabio Wardley to take him on after dispatching Polish heavyweight Mariusz Wach.

Clarke was in just his seventh professional fight of his career and had been given a mandatory shot against Wardley, the British champion, but turned down the chance in favour of getting more experience.

As a result he was set up with a fight against Polish veteran Wach at York Hall in London, and he duly went the distance over 10 rounds, four more rounds than he had ever completed.

Wardley showed the prowess that earned him an Olympic bronze medal as he opened up against his rival, who was pushing close to 300lbs.

Clarke paced himself after some early flurries and was able to take Wach’s own heft blows, and won each round convincingly, to take a 10-90 win.

Speaking after the fight, Clarke appeared confident, this time of taking on Wardley.

“Come on, come fight me, let’s do it!” Clarke said. “I think it’s one of those fights where there’s a lot of demand. People will be saying he can flatten me now, even more than they have been. There’s only one way to prove it and that’s for us both to compete.”

He added: “I’ll be public enemy number one again. But I’m a good man, I live right, I do right by God, right by my family. Judge me on that.

“It’s been a media storm over the last few weeks but I’m going to pat myself on the back for getting in there tonight and dealing with it because I know a lot of people that would have crumbled.”

Discussing his decision to duck Wardley, he explained: “I’m not saying I would have lost [to Wardley] but I can definitely be better. I take that one.

“I was an eager beaver. People can say [you’re an] Olympian and what not but them 10 rounds, 12 rounds, they’re a lot different. So I’ll go back and work on myself. Sometimes it’s good to listen to knowledge.

“If the opportunity comes [to fight Wardley], people will tell you I’m a fighting man and I won’t say no but I’ll definitely go back to the gym and work on doing these longer rounds.”
