Lewiston native Patrick Dempsey ‘heartbroken’ by Maine mass shooting
“Grey’s Anatomy” alum Patrick Dempsey — who hails from Lewiston, Maine — said he is “shocked” by Wednesday’s mass shooting in his hometown that killed at least 18 people and injured 13 more.
“I am shocked, and deeply saddened by last night’s tragedy in my hometown, Lewiston, Maine,” Dempsey, 57, wrote Thursday on Instagram.
“Maine’s great strength is its sense of community, and now we are being asked to come together to support everyone that has been devastated by this senseless act.”
“My family and I are heartbroken for the victims, their families, and the community,” Dempsey concluded the post, on which he turned off comments.
Dempsey has deep ties to Lewiston.
Following his mother’s struggles with cancer, the “Disenchanted” star opened the Dempsey Center, which helps cancer patients and their families with counseling, support groups, and integrative therapies.
The nonprofit has locations in Lewiston and South Portland, Maine.
Dempsey returns to his hometown annually for the Dempsey Challenge, which raises money for the cancer centers through running, walking, and cycling events.
He also received an honorary degree from Bates College in Lewiston in 2017.
The Post reached out to Dempsey’s reps for comment.
Dempsey’s statement on Wednesday’s tragedy comes as police continue their search for shooting suspect Robert Card, 40.
Card is accused of opening fire at a bar and a bowling alley, where a children’s league was taking place, police said.
He is a petroleum specialist in the US Army Reserve who recently reported mental health issues, including hearing voices.
Card is reported to have been committed to a mental health facility in Maine for two weeks over the summer.
