Lightning Kills One Soldier and Injures 9 Others at Georgia Army Base

One soldier was killed and nine others were injured in a lightning strike on Wednesday at the Fort Gordon Army base in Georgia, a spokeswoman said.

The episode occurred at about 11:10 a.m. in a training area at the base, the spokeswoman, Anne H. Bowman, said. There were isolated but strong thunderstorms in the area at the time.

“It is with a heavy heart Fort Gordon confirms one of the soldiers injured in the lightning strike this afternoon succumbed to their injuries,” Ms. Bowman wrote in an email on Wednesday night.

She said that the extent of injuries to the nine other soldiers was not currently known and that she did not know whether they had all been struck by lightning or whether lightning had caused the injuries in another manner.

Fort Gordon’s Department of Emergency Services and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene immediately, Ms. Bowman said. The soldiers were taken to Dwight D. Eisenhower Medical Center, which is on the base, she added.

The base, which is about 10 miles southwest of Augusta, Ga., is home to a wing of the Army’s cyber operations and a training program in information and communication technology, among other departments.

Ms. Bowman said that the Army would not release the names of the soldiers until their families had been notified.
