Lionel Messi could return for PSG match against Bayern Munich in Champions League; Kylian Mbappe update

Lionel Messi is “not uncertain” to return for the first leg of Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.

Messi picked up a hamstring injury mid-week when PSG were knocked out of the French Cup by Marseille.

However, he is only expected to be out for a few days so will miss the Ligue 1 leaders’ game on Saturday against Monaco.

Messi has been in great form this season with 29 goal contributions from 25 games for PSG and led Argentina to World Cup glory at the end of 2022.

“He felt muscle fatigue [against Marseille],” said manager Christophe Galtier. “He will resume training on Monday. He is not uncertain for [the] Bayern [game].”

On PSG’s match against Monaco, he added: “We know the importance of Leo. With his absence, we will have to play in a different way – to have a more solid, more compact team structure, to use each other.”

Kylian Mbappe is also currently out of action after he picked up a hamstring injury at the start of this month during PSG’s 3-1 win over Montpellier.

Mbappe is less likely to be part of the squad that host Bayern on Tuesday, which is live on BT Sport, suggested Galtier.

“Regarding Kylian, the communication has already been made,” he said. “We talked about a three-week unavailability.

“Kylian is being treated. The player’s health comes first. I will be very vigilant about the player’s health, especially since the season is still long.”
