Live news: Miami mayor Suarez seeks Republican presidential nomination

Miami mayor Francis Suarez has filed paperwork to run for the Republican presidential nomination.

The 45-year-old Cuban-American has risen to national prominence by helping turn his city into a magnet for technology and finance groups leaving high-tax San Francisco and New York.

The son of a two-term Miami mayor, Suarez has overwhelmingly won two races for the non-partisan position.

Despite his popularity in south Florida, however, he enters an increasingly crowded field that already includes a prominent Florida Republican, governor Ron DeSantis.

Still, Suarez is widely regarded as a charismatic campaigner and has carved out a more tolerant and pro-business reputation than DeSantis.
