After days of contention over stopgap spending measures to avert a federal shutdown, Speaker Kevin McCarthy managed on Saturday to pass a continuing resolution to keep the government funded through mid-November. It may cost him the House speakership, as hard-right Republicans led by Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida have called for him to be removed from his post.

Without their support, given Republicans’ narrow majority, Mr. McCarthy will need some protective action from across the aisle if he is to retain his position. If enough Democrats vote in his favor, vote “present” (neither for nor against) or simply do not show up, the bar for a majority could be low enough for Mr. McCarthy’s supporters to clear it.

The House is expected to vote on the motion Tuesday afternoon. See how each member votes here.
