‘Love Actually’ scene goes viral after Joni Mitchell’s stunning Grammys performance

The scene from the 2003 British romantic comedy “Love Actually,” featuring Joni Mitchell’s hit “Both Sides Now,” has gone viral after Mitchell’s stunning performance of the song on Sunday night’s Grammy Awards.

“Watching Joni Mitchell perform at the #Grammys for the first time at the age of 80,” Gibson Johns tweeted with a screenshot of Emma Thompson crying in “Love Actually” when Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” plays.

In the scene, Karen (Thompson), who’s married to Harry (Alan Rickman), discovers his affair with a much-younger woman (Heike Makatsch) — on Christmas Day.

She opens a present from Harry, expecting a necklace she’d seen him buy at a store … only to find a Joni Mitchell CD from him, “To continue your emotional learning,” Harry says. Karen flees to a bedroom and has a good cry as “Both Sides Now” plays.

She then wipes away her tears and returns to her family.

Mitchell, 80, sung the song at the 66th Grammys Sunday night and mesmerized the audience in her first-ever appearance at the awards show.

She was seated during the song, due to health complications, but looked robust as she crooned “Both Sides Now” accompanied by several musicians who were seated beside her.

Johns’ tweet triggered a groundswell of reaction from fans.

“the [crying face emoji] flowed thinking about Emma,” one user commented. “lol it’s forever in my mind when I hear this song.”

“My first thought hearing her was Love Actually,” wrote another about Mitchell’s performance.

“That’s the picture that was in my mind as she sang! Emma Thompson is another brilliant woman,” another posted.

“Yes, this movie, Joni’s song,” a fan chimed in. “Beautiful!”

“This is ALL of us right now,” @themomlawyer posted.

“This is the movie that introduced me to her,” wrote kate_lately. “This scene. All I see when I hear this song.”

Twitter user wrote that “it was beautiful and sad and just right!”

“Love Actually,” directed by Richard Curtis, also starred Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Laura Linney, Keira Knightley and Bill Nighy in a large ensemble cast.

The movie revolves around the love stories of different groups of people.

It was nominated for two Golden Globes in 2004 and garnered a Critics Choice Award.

Nighy won a BAFTA, the UK equivalent of an Oscar, for his performance as rock ‘n’ roll legend Billy Mack, who records a No. 1 Christmas single, forgoes a party invitation from Elton John and gets drunk with his manager, Joe (Gregor Fisher).
