Madrid Open: Wimbledon champ Elena Rybakina stunned by Anna Kalinskaya in second round, Barbora Krejcikova through

Elena Rybakina has been knocked out of the Madrid Open after suffering a shock 7-5 4-6 6-3 defeat to Anna Kalinskaya.

Kalinskaya produced the third top-10 win of her career and her first top-10 win on clay after seeing off the Wimbledon champion in three sets in two hours and 13 minutes.

After avenging her three-set defeat to Rybakina at the Miami Open in March, Kalinskaya will next face No. 27 seed Petra Martic, who beat Laura Siegemund 7-6(6) 6-3.

“I’m very happy,” Kalinskaya said after the surprise victory.

“Elena is a very tough player. Since juniors we always play difficult matches against each other.

“I’m happy that we can show a good level of tennis. I’m happy actually for both of us.”

The 2021 French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova is also through to the next round after a 6-3 4-6 6-0 win over Danka Kovinic.

Kovinic’s six-match winning streak was brought to an end on Friday by Krejcikova who produced her first win in only her third singles appearance at the tournament.

Krejcikova came from an early break down to win the first set 6-3 before Kovinic raised her game to level the match.

But in the third set, Krejcikova took full control and secured her third bagel of 2023.

Former world No. 5 Eugenie Bouchard, now ranked at No. 285, has gone out after a 6-2 7-5 defeat to 18th seed Martina Trevisan.

Bouchard, 29, returned to competition last August following 17 months with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

The Canadian impressed in qualifying for the Madrid Open and won her opening match against Dayana Yastremska 6-7(8) 6-2 6-2, but could not find a way past the Italian.
