Malia Obama makes red carpet debut at Sundance Film Festival for ‘The Heart’
Malia Obama made her red carpet debut at the Sundance Film Festival Thursday night ahead of the premiere of her short film, “The Heart.”
The eldest daughter of former US President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama posed for photos at the Prospector Square Theater in Park City, Utah, ahead of a screening of her new project.
The 25-year-old wrote and directed the short film, which is credited under the name Malia Ann, as Ann is her middle name.
Obama looked chic in a wool gray coat atop a loose button-down shirt and a pair of jeans.
She topped off her look with a pair of chunky platform boots and a gray scarf in an effort to keep warm.
The film will be screened as part of the short fiction films category at the annual festival, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The outlet added that the project centers around a grieving son who received a dying request from his late mother.
“The film is about lost objects and lonely people and forgiveness and regret, but I also think it works hard to uncover where tenderness and closeness can exist in those things,” Malia revealed in an interview about the project.
“We hope you enjoy the film and it makes you feel a bit less lonely, or at least reminds you not to forget about the people who are.”
The film was previously screened at the Telluride Film Festival in Colo. back in Sept. 2023, as well as the Chicago International Film Festival in Oct. 2023.
It’s not the first time Malia has tried her hand in the entertainment world.
She previously served as a writer on the Prime Video thriller series Swarm, released in March 2023.
The show stars Damson Idris, Chloe Bailey, Rory Culkin, and Paris Jackson.
Janine Nabers, a showrunner on that set, told “Entertainment Tonight” at the time that Malia “brought a lot to the table” on the project.
“She’s really, really dedicated to her craft,” Nabers told the outlet, adding that the Harvard alum is an “incredible writer.”
