Man dies in lake outside LA venue

A man drowned in the lake outside SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. on Friday, the second death to occur in the man-made body of water since the stadium opened in 2020.

The unidentified man, believed to be in his early 20s, entered the lake at around 9:30 p.m. but never resurfaced above the water, Inglewood Police Lt. Cilia Islas to the LA Times.

Police said a dive team was immediately dispatched to search the 15-foot-deep lake for the missing man.

The man’s body was found shortly before 11 p.m. by rescuers, who attempted to administer CPR to revive him.

After unsuccessfully being able to save the man, he was pronounced dead at the scene, Islas told the outlet.

Police said an investigation has been launched into the man’s death as Islas described the incident as an accidental drowning.

The victim’s name is currently being withheld by authorities.

“It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of an individual last evening,” SoFi Stadium officials shared in a statement to the outlet.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the individual’s family and friends for their loss. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”

It is unclear if the victim was an attendee of the event.

His death marks the second time an individual has drowned in the lake outside SoFi Stadium, home to the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Chargers, since the venue opened in Sept. 2020.

A 45-year-old had previously died after jumping into the artificial back in July 2022.

Stadium security guards spotted the man on surveillance hopping a fence in the stadium’s parking lot before entering the man-made lake.

Divers from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Special Enforcement Bureau recovered the man’s body from the lake more than three hours later.

Dubbed “River Lake,” the artificial 6-acre lake holds close to 11 million gallons of water, according to the Architect Newspaper.

Rivers Lake also features multiple waterfalls and is designed to be an aesthetic addition to the stadium’s grounds.
