Man sets gas station on fire with a blowtorch, trapping worker

A Detroit man set a gas station on fire with a blowtorch after appearing to get into an argument with the clerk — trapping the worker inside the raging inferno, shocking video shows.

The frightening footage from inside the West Seven Mile Road gas station kiosk reveals the moment the alleged arsonist, Julian Waddell Miller, steps into the store with a trash can and blowtorch in hand on June 20 at about 2:50 a.m.

Miller, 35, wearing a white T-shirt and colorful shorts, dumps trash from the bin onto the floor before appearing to exchange words with the clerk, 27, who is behind the counter and out of frame.

The suspect then points to the trash and sets it on fire with his blue blowtorch as he quickly flees through the door behind him.

The fire spreads immediately, covering nearly the entire store in less than two seconds as the clerk stands trapped behind the counter.

The employee was rushed to the hospital. where he was treated for first-degree burns, the Detroit Police Department said in a statement.

The harrowing footage was captured by Project Green Light cameras, a public-private partnership project aimed at trying to reduce crime in Detroit through a series of cameras installed at crime-prone areas.

Police confirmed that they had arrested Miller on Tuesday, and he was charged with intent to murder, first-degree arson and a litany of other property damage and assault felonies.

He was released on Friday on a $100,000 bond and was also ordered to wear a GPS tracking device.

A bond redetermination hearing is scheduled for Monday, with a probable cause hearing set for Friday.
