Man who slapped doctor at conference for allegedly sexually assaulting his wife ID’d as Miami filmmaker: report
The man who was filmed in a viral video slapping a doctor at an OB/GYN conference at Stony Brook University and accusing him of sexually assaulting his wife years ago has been identified as a Brazilian-born filmmaker, according to a report.
Rodrigo Herzog, 41, of Miami, brazenly marched up to the panel at The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology event on May 23 and slapped New York doctor William Burke in the face twice, The Daily Mail reported.
Herzog accused Burke of “touching” his doctor wife while she was in medical school seven years ago.
Burke, the director of gynecologic oncology at Stony Brook University Cancer Center, had opened the panel to questions from the audience about their discussion when Herzog’s wife came forward and pointedly asked him if he follows industry guidelines regarding sexual misconduct.
Herzog then furiously storms the front of the room, grabs the much smaller Burke by his shirt collar and tells the crowd, “This motherf—er sexually assaulted my wife seven years ago,” the clip that circulated on social media shows. He then slapped the doctor.
“You know what you did… you touched my wife seven years ago in New York,” the man shouted, as he first pointed to his wife and then slapped the physician a second time. “Don’t be an a–hole.”
On Tuesday, Herzog posted a video to his Instagram addressing the incident and defending his actions. Burke reportedly intends to press charges against the Brazilian filmmaker.
“Man, if you see a video of a man aggressively defending his own wife who was sexually assaulted and the only thing that you have to say is ”Two wrongs don’t make a right,’ /violence begets violence” or ‘I would never do that,’ I don’t even get sad for you, man,” he said in the video from a hotel in Oakland, according to the Daily Mail.
“I get sad for your wife or your sister or your mom, who is going to see something like this and she is going to know exactly the kind of man that she has inside her house — that type of coward who disappears when something bad happens, that type of coward who defends other men, understand? Such a shame.”
The incident between Burke and Herzog’s wife allegedly happened while she was Burke’s student at Columbia University’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, where she completed a four-year medical program in 2016, the Daily Mail reported.
“Seven years I waited for this, seven!” Herzog screamed at the doctor as he began walking out. “Seven years my wife has been suffering because you… a predator.”
In a separate video taken as the man and his wife were leaving the venue, the wife can be heard telling a bystander that she had reported the doctor for harassment at the time the alleged incident occurred.
The couple appeared to be speaking to a pair of security guards, one of whom can be heard saying, “There’s a better way to handle it.”
“There’s a better way to do [it]?” Herzog incredulously asked the guard. “He sexually assaulted my wife — there’s a better way to do [it]?”
The doctor has not been charged with any crime, according to Baltimore police.
After police initially said Burke, 53, did not want to file criminal charges against Herzog, the doctor told The Daily Mail outside of his Long Island home on Sunday that he’s changed his mind and will be pressing charges.
“The only thing that’s obvious is that I was assaulted on video,” he said.
He said he did not know Herzog and would not confirm whether or not he knew his wife, the outlet reported.
Columbia University Irving Medical Center said it is still looking into Herzog’s wife’s allegations against Burke, who left the university in 2017.
