“Guardiola tried to sign De Jong in 2019, before the Dutchman was swayed by the huge contract at Barca – and he remains a fan.”
United line up two ‘keepers
Manchester United have two new goalkeeping targetes: Feyenoord stopper Justin Bijlow and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Kevin Trapp, with Andre Onana too expensive due to current Financial Fair Play restrictions on the club.
“Ten Hag has made it clear he wants a new No 1 to replace out-of-contract David De Gea and a back-up to allow him to sell Dean Henderson.
“But FFP restrictions mean United don’t have the £60 million it would take Inter Milan to sell Cameroonian international keeper Andre Onana.
“Feyenoord will demand £20million for 25-year-old Dutch international Bijlow.
“Trapp, 32, who has made seven appearances for Germany, would command a fee close to £10million.”
De Gea could make Saudi swap
After leaving Manchester United at the end of his contract, goalkeeper David de Gea could link up with former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo.
“De Gea’s Manchester United contract has expired, and while he could be re-signed by the Red Devils, there is significant belief that the Spanish goalkeeper’s next step will be elsewhere.
“And with all the speculation of players moving to Saudi Arabia – and the wealth of talent those clubs have already acquired – it was natural to expect that de Gea could be among those making their way across to the Middle East.
“It is believed he could pocket £250,000-a-week if he agrees to take up a role between the sticks at Al-Nassr.”
Rooney aiming for European return
Wayne Rooney harbours ambitions of returning from managing in MLS to take over a side in Europe.
“However, despite the excitement leading up to the fixture, Rooney has set his eyes on a bigger prize. Speaking in a column for mlssoccer.com Rooney has hopes that a decent result could land him a new job in the future.
“Rooney’s side will face Premier League giants Arsenal on July 19 at his team’s home, Audi Field. A team made up of 24 MLS players has been chosen with 12 selected by Rooney and the remaining 12 players chosen by fans and the media, with two selected by MLS commissioner Don Garber.
“‘Occasions like the All-Star Game remind me why I chose to continue my journey as a coach here in MLS,’ he said. ‘My aspiration is to manage at an elite European club someday, and in those environments, you’re working with very diverse teams with elite professionals from all over the world.’”
