Marco Odermatt claims seventh World Cup win of the season in style – ‘One of the best ever’

Marco Odermatt completed a downhill double in Wengen as the home favourite powered to his seventh win of the World Cup season.

The Swiss ace set the benchmark with a time of 2:25.64 on the famous slope and watched as all his competitors failed to beat him in a repeat result from Thursday’s weekend opener.

Odermatt was delighted with his showing but admitted it was “bittersweet” after Norway’s Aleksandar Aamodt Kilde was involved in a bad accident.

“My performance was probably one of the best ever, from my side,” Odermatt told fis-ski.com. “I came into the finish and I knew this would probably be hard to beat.

“Still a bittersweet day for sure when you see a friend, like Alek crashing that hard.

“I hope he is a little bit well, even if it didn’t look so good. It was a very hard week for all of us, especially if you were sick like he was.

“Maybe the energy level was not high enough for today. To see a friend crash like this, it’s always very, very sad.”

France’s Cyprien Sarrazin, who won Friday’s super-G event, was a clear second 0.59s behind Odermatt, while Italy’s Dominik Paris completed the podium.

Twelve athletes failed to finish, including Kilde, who had to be airlifted to hospital after crashing into fences near the finish line.

Odermatt leads the World Cup standings in three of the four alpine skiing disciplines, and in the race for the overall Crystal Globe.
